I've been listening to a lot of my Elliott Smith records lately -- From a Basement on a Hill and XO, in particular -- and it's strange. I've forgotten just how good he really was. Not just as a singer and songwriter, but as a producer as well. His songs had just enough on them to not sound like Robert Pollard's tossed off mediocrities, but not too much on them to sound dated to any specific time period.
